    The Shape of Thought
    Interactive installation art work / 2018
    The work was invited 2018 Manchester School of Art Graduation Show as special work.
    Shortlisted for the 2019 Beijing Today Art Museum Young Artists Group Exhibition.



    The work was inspired by the Chinese thousand-buddha images, which is using continuous graphic repetition to make the abstract ideologies authentic and powerful, which lead to the individuals will be in awe of it. As Gilles believed that truthful repetition is completely artificial and contradicts everything that changes and develops naturally. I would like to express the civilized form which created by the authority through the fragmented reorganisation of free consciousness, so that people conform to the concrete society constructed by the ruler.

    In the final work, wood was used to make frames and coved by white fabric. When a person passes through the light, his shadow will be cutted into rectangles and installed in each frame. The people behind the screen present a completely simplified state on the screen.

    The image of Buddha is usually considered a sacred symbol. However, it has lost its aura in the writing of the Chinese writer Ma Jian, showing people’s desire and greed hidden in their hearts. Buddha is human, and human is Buddha. Behind the light are all living beings in the social framework.
