“ …at the heart of this critical language, between several discourses, those of sociology, of semiology, and of psychoanalysis—but that, by ultimate dissatisfaction with all of them, I was bearing witness to the only sure thing that was in me (however naive it might be): a desperate resistance to any reductive system. For each time, having resorted to any such language to whatever degree, each time I felt it hardening and thereby tending to reduction and reprimand, I would gently leave it and seek elsewhere: I began to speak differently.”

Under the Shadow - Match Men
    Interactive Installation / 2018

In this installation artwork, I reinterpreted the Second Industrial Revolution oil painting Match Men with a new artistic expression. It is intended to show and discuss the life and psychological state of mancunians in different historical periods through the contemporary artistic expression of traditional oil paintings. The title of the work is “Under the Shadow–Match Men”, which means that the shadow and the object themselves are as inseparable as “past” and “present”. At the same time, they reflect their unique correlation like a mirror, like a dialogue across time and space.

I chose “cotton yarn” and “metal”, representatives of the industrial revolution period of Manchester city, as the creative subjects, and made “3D” match man in one space. Then a new picture of a contemporary man of Manchester was illuminated on the wall. Small holes through the beam of light can focus on the details of the picture.
